Do prefácio: “In the preface of the ‘Practical Handbook on Port Wine’, which was published in 1925, I explained that the reason which had induced me to produce that little book was to provide a technical work which might be useful to members of the port trade in Portugal, where the wine is produced, and in other countries, where it is sold and consumed.
That book is now out of print, and the gratifying reception accorded to it has impelled me to write another on a more ambitious scale, dealing with the subject from a general and historical point of view as well as from the strictly technical side.
“I trust, therefore, that it will prove of use and interest, not only to members of the wine trade, but also to that section of the public which either appreciates fine wines as connoisseurs, or aspires to attain that enviable position. (…)”
